How to clean your monitor: an easy guide for a spotless setup
All our belongings need a nice cleaning every once in a while, even those that are never leaving the house. But how to correctly clean your setup and your monitor? Other than dusting, it’s important to keep the home office or the gaming setup tidy, neat and germ-free but many may feel unsure on what to use on their display and how to use it. Let’s take a look together, it’s actually easier than you think!
For normal cleaning, it’s enough to gently wipe the screen with a clean and soft microfiber cloth. It’s perfect for common cleaning routines and to keep dust away.
For deeper cleanings, first step is to unplug the monitor. Then slightly damp the cloth with pure water or the spray cleaner of your choice. One thing to keep in mind is to never spray liquid directly on to any screen: it could run inside and cause damage.
Are there any recommendations for the kind of spray to use?
We suggest avoiding cleaning products that contain ammonia, ethyl alcohol, ethanol, acetone, hexane, toluene, ethyl acid, methyl chloride, or other organic solvents. These chemicals can react with the materials that make or coat the flat screen, which could result in a permanent discoloration of the screen or similar kinds of damage.
For most extensive cleaning, spray a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol on a non-linting microfiber cloth until it is damp but not over-saturated, then gently wipe the screen. Always remember to unplug the monitor beforehand. After cleaning, the best way to get rid of any left isopropyl alcohol from the cloth is washing it in pure water. Do not skip this passage: the isopropyl alcohol is highly flammable and can easily ignite.
Don’t forget to clean all your peripherals as well – our hands are always all over keyboards, mouse, and pads, so it’s essential to have them clean regularly. As we learned, first step is to unplug everything, then use either a cleaning cloth or a small brush (even a clean toothbrush may work) to gently go through any devices.
