Power Sensor 2: What Is It?

Saving energy is more crucial than ever—for the planet, for humanity, and for our future. By adopting energy-efficient habits and exploring innovative solutions, we can make meaningful progress in our daily lives. When it comes to monitors, activating sleep mode has long been a go-to practice for reducing energy consumption. But there’s an even smarter way: Power Sensor 2.

What Is Power Sensor 2?

Power Sensor 2 is the latest innovation from Philips Monitors, designed to enhance work and productivity while significantly reducing energy usage. This intelligent technology detects user proximity to the monitor and automatically adjusts its behavior:

  • When the user approaches, the monitor and connected PC/laptop wake up and resume operation.
  • When the user steps away, the monitor enters sleep mode with a lock feature.

Power Sensor vs. Power Sensor 2: What’s the Difference?

While both Power Sensor and Power Sensor 2 are designed to optimize energy efficiency, they differ significantly in technology, functionality, and user control.

  • Power Sensor:
The original Power Sensor technology uses infrared signals to detect user presence. It transmits and receives these harmless signals to determine if someone is in front of the monitor. If no user is detected, the monitor reduces brightness or enters a low-power state to conserve energy.
  • Power Sensor 2:
Power Sensor 2 uses a Time-of-Flight (TOF) sensor to detect your presence more accurately than traditional motion sensors. When you step away, the monitor dims to reduce energy. With the OSD setting set to “User” in Windows 11, it also locks the screen and puts your PC/laptop to sleep. When you return, the monitor restores brightness and you can resume once you’re logged in. On Windows 11, you may be logged in automatically if your webcam is set up with Windows Hello.

Key features of Power Sensor 2:

  • A 30-degree viewing angle ensures accurate detection across a range of positions, even if the user is slightly off-center.
  • The proximity detection range is fully customizable via the monitor’s OSD Power Sensor submenu, offering settings for 50 cm, 75 cm, or 120 cm. This flexibility allows users to tailor the detection to their unique workspace setup.
  • When enabled, the system intelligently adjusts monitor brightness, contrast, and other settings. For instance, if brightness is set to 100%, Power Sensor 2 can reduce power consumption by up to 80% when the user leaves the detection range.

The addition of a User Setting in the OSD Power Sensor submenu enables users to refine these features further, making Power Sensor 2 adaptable to a variety of use cases and environments.

Requirements for Power Sensor 2

Power Sensor 2 is compatible exclusively with Windows 11 and requires adjustments to be made to the connected laptop or PC. After selecting the “User” option in the OSD settings, additional configurations must be applied within Windows 11 to enable this feature to function correctly.
