TÜV Rheinland: A guide on blue light certification

Most people use monitors during their everyday life, for long hours every day, for work or for entertainment. With the increased use of devices during the day, users are at a greater risk of exposure to high-energy visible (HEV) blue light and public interest on the issue has increased. Many Philips monitors do offer the Philips LowBlue Mode settings, which are LowBlue light software and hardware solutions to reduce blue light by lowering the blue channel emission. The software solution allows users to adjust the setting through the On-Screen Display, and the hardware solution achieves the result through tweaking the LED backlight.

Crucially, this reduces harm to the eyes without impacting viewing quality. To further provide users with the best and safest user experience, different models are now TÜV certified, proving the safety and quality standards required to be compliance with specific regulations. 

To understand the criteria of TÜV eye comfort certification, seven aspects of user experience are considered: Freedom of movement, Free of flicker, Low blue light, Display performance, Reflection free screen, Free of disturbing gloss, Health and comfort. Accordingly, the test standard of ISO 9241-307 ensures a flicker-free experience; and GS-mark, Ergonomic-mark or ‘ISO 9241-307/308/309’ certifications prove the products meet the standard of display performance. In regards to Low Blue Light, products get certified based on the 2PfG 2383 Low Blue Light Content’ pass test report.

  • What is TÜV Rheinland certification?

TÜV stands for Technischer Überwachungsverein (Technical Inspection Association) and is a German consulting business that certifies compliance with various recognized safety and qualification standards. The most widely recognized (and the largest) TÜV in Germany is TÜV Rheinland.

The mission of TÜV Rheinland is to make technical systems, products, and services safer, and to enable consumers to purchase better and consciously. To all products that meet defined criteria and defined safety-relevant aspects, TÜV Rheinland issues a product certificate as a confirmation. The certificate contains several pieces of information: it specifies the basic principles according to which a product was tested, and it includes corresponding test marks to provide customers visible proof of quality.

  • What does it mean to be TÜV approved?

TÜV certifications ensure that a product, service, or process has been tested for safety and that it complies with the requirements of national, regional, and international regulations. To be TÜV approved means that the product has been successfully tested by an independent third party, and that customers will get what they are paying for.   • How to get TÜV certification?

To get TÜV Certification you must apply for the desired certification sought for your product. Then TÜV’s international team of experts carry out testing either in accredited test laboratories or on-site operational facilities (specifically for very large machines). Testing is needed to certify the safety, usability, and quality of technical systems as well as capital and consumer goods. After successful acceptance, a product certificate with a test mark is issued. This is not the last step, because to ensure the continued validity of each certificate the team of experts will regularly monitor production sites to verify the correct factory and to check it corresponds to the tested sample.
